It’s hard to believe that this year marks 30 years since I graduated from my beloved alma mater, Spelman College. May is our sacred reunion month, a time when many of my Spelman Sisters descend upon Atlanta, journeying from near and far to reconnect with the place where we blossomed. We were young women then, just beginning our journeys in the world-wide-eyed, full of dreams, growing, learning, and embracing all the adventures that lay ahead.
Now, as I spend time with my cherished classmates, most of us in our early 50s, the conversations have shifted. Many are opening up about the changes happening within their bodies—the natural, but often surprising, transitions that come with menopause.
Some speak of their “personal summers,” smiling through the waves of hot flashes. Others mention brain fog, unexpected weight gain, hormonal imbalances, and yes, even vocal changes (I’m raising my hand for that one!). The list of symptoms goes on, but so does our sisterhood, our grace, and our resilience.
So, what’s a girl to do?
The first thing we must do is take a gentle but honest look at our lifestyle. What are the things within our control? How can we support ourselves so that menopause becomes a chapter we move through with grace—not one we merely endure?
Of course, consulting a trusted doctor who is knowledgeable about menopause is always a wise place to start. But alongside medical care, there are holistic approaches that many of us are turning to for comfort and support. Here are a few gentle practices that may bring relief:
🌸 Gentle Ways to Support Yourself During This Transition:
- Mindfulness & Meditation: These practices offer a soft place to land amidst the emotional waves. A few minutes of deep breathing, quiet reflection, or guided meditation can ease anxiety and bring clarity to foggy moments.
- Yoga: Gentle movement, deep stretches, and mindful breathing can reduce hot flashes, promote better sleep, and ground you emotionally. Let your mat be your sanctuary.
- Herbal Support: Natural remedies like black cohosh, dong quai, and evening primrose oil have helped some women manage symptoms. Be sure to check in with your doctor before introducing any new supplements.
- What’s On Your Plate: A balanced, colorful plate can work wonders. Foods rich in phytoestrogens, like soy, flaxseeds, and legumes may help regulate hormones. Fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins can nourish you from the inside out.
- Acupuncture: This ancient healing practice has offered relief to many. With the help of a licensed practitioner, acupuncture may ease hot flashes, support restful sleep, and rebalance energy.
So yes, we may not be getting any younger, but we are getting wiser. And we can choose, with intention and love, how we care for these incredible bodies that have carried us so far.
