I have a confession to make. I am not a big Valentine's Day head. Actually, I am pretty low maintenance - no need for the box of chocolates (unless they are Forrero Rocher) and red roses. However, there was a time when I really felt the urge to do all the things that you do to show that special person in your life that you have mad love for them. I came to realize that all of that effort I was putting into others, was not something that I was necessarily willing to do for myself as a practice. So, here are three things that I am not doing for Valentine's day, but am making more and more efforts to do for myself.
1 - Giving Thoughtful Gifts to Others - People often put a lot of effort into selecting meaningful and thoughtful gifts for their loved ones on Valentine's Day. They sometimes even break the bank. But when was the last time you treated yourself and applied that same level of thoughtfulness to you? Today, I am committing to being more intentional and will reward myself (big and small) for all the hard work that I do to sustain myself and to grow and elevate.
2 - Expressing Affection to Others - As you know, Valentine's Day is a day to express love and affection towards others through words, actions, and gestures. But how are you feeling and what thoughts do you have about yourself? While it may be easy to openly share your feelings to those you care about, some people struggle to show the same level of love and appreciation towards themselves. Today, I am committing to shutting down negative self-talk and self-doubt. I show love and respect for myself by the things that I say to myself and ultimately the grace that I give myself. Shoot...I think I'm about to go write me a love letter to myself for encouragement and upliftment.
3 - Spending Quality Time with Others - Many people dedicate Valentine's Day to spending quality time with their loved ones, creating special moments and memories together. But when was the last time that you created a special moment for yourself? Some people neglect to carve out self-care and self-love activities during this time, like a solo experience to a museum, a wine tasting or solo lunch date. Today, I am committing to creating more opportunities to love up on myself by building in quality time into my routine. I am enough! While it is beautiful to spend quality time with others...I can enjoy my own company and spend time with myself and have just as much fun.
By no means am I telling you to stop doing the wonderful things that you enjoy doing on Valentine's day for the people in your life that you really care about and love. But what I am suggesting is to add yourself into that rotation. You Deserve the Best of Everything! You are beautiful, amazing and deserve just as much love from yourself as you give out to others. Okay? I'm just saying...
