Ever felt like there was something more you were supposed to be doingâbut you just couldnât quite put your finger on it? Like there was more to who you were meant to be, more to what you were meant to practice⊠maybe even your ministry?
After seven long, grueling years in grad school, I finally defended my dissertation in Mathematics Education. I had landed my dream job as a college mathematics professor. This was what I had trained for, prayed for. I had made it.
I felt proud. Accomplished. I had done the thing! I loved helping my students see math differently, loved watching them have those lightbulb moments when it all just clicked.
But something else was happening.
There was this stirring deep inside me, a nudge I couldnât quite name, couldnât quite shake, but I knew it was there.
See, while I was in grad school, stress was running me ragged, and it started showing up in my body. My health took a hit. I knew I needed to make some changes, but I had no clue where to start.
Then, when I started teaching, for a while, it felt good. But as the years passed, this question kept creeping into my mind:
"Is this it?"
Like⊠is this what I worked so hard for? Am I just gonna teach math, sit on a bunch of committees, and then retire after a few decades? Was this the full picture of my purpose?
I knew I was making an impact in my studentsâ lives. But that whisper inside me kept nudging⊠and nudging. I was meant for something more.
Then, one summer, I completed a wellness training that flipped the script on how I saw my health. Thatâs when the spark really ignited. I realized I wanted to help peopleânot just with numbers, but with how they felt in their bodies, how they nourished themselves, how they took care of their whole being.
And that work? That work grew into something way bigger than just food.
At the core of it all, Iâve always been about transformation. Back then, it was about helping students shift how they saw themselves in math. But when I stepped into wellness work, it became about helping people elevate their health, mindset, and well-being.
Find Your Work.
Lock in.
Maybe youâve spent years gathering skills and experiences that feel all over the placeâlike a puzzle you canât quite put together. But trust me, all those pieces add up. They fuel whateverâs next for you.
Just do the work. Learn what you need to learn right now. Itâs all leading somewhere bigger than you can't see yet. Itâs all part of your Purpose.
You already have everything you need for your next breakthrough. So donât second-guess it.
Who wouldâve thought that a Guyanese born Brooklyn girlâwho just happened to be a math professorâliving in Atlanta, would become a plant-based chef and wellness coach? I sure didnât.
But now? I see it clearly. My purpose has always been in the work of transformation. Teaching. Connecting. Serving.
So, in December 2022, I did something wild. I walked away from my good, steady state job. I took a chanceâon myself, on this work, on the impact I knew I was meant to make.
What About You? Are You Purpose-Aligned?
If youâre feeling stuck, unsure, or just know thereâs something more for you, here are three things that might help:
Self-Reflection & Exploration Take time to think about what truly lights you up. What excites you? What gives you energy? Journaling, meditation, or working with a coach can help you get clear on whatâs next.
Define Your Mission Statement Whatâs your "why"? Write down what you value, what you want to create in this world, and what impact you want to make. Use it to check if your work is lining up with your purpose.
Explore Purpose-Driven Opportunities Start looking into organizations, businesses, and communities that match your values. Connect with people doing the work that excites you. Sometimes, just putting yourself in the right rooms can open doors you never saw coming.
At the end of the day, you gotta feel good about how youâre showing up in the world. Because thatâs when we make our most meaningful impact.
So tell meâwhatâs calling you? Whatâs that whisper you canât ignore?
